Job Description

Inyo County Sheriff Office Correctional Officer PositionsThis is a continuous recruitment for the Inyo County Sheriff Office Correctional Officer positions. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis and qualified applicants will be placed into an eligibility pool. Periodically, applicants from the pool will be invited to participate in the Physical Agility Test and Written Examination.Applicants only need to submit one application to be considered for the next recruitment pull and should not submit multiple applications during the same recruitment period. Following each recruitment pull, applicants who were not selected to participate in the testing process and who wish to be considered for future recruitment pulls must submit a new application. Please do not submit multiple applications between recruitment pulls, as only one application per applicant will be considered for each testing cycle.Examples Of DutiesDuties may include, but are not limited to the following:Oversees the security and conduct of inmatesSupervises trustees in performance of routine custodial workProcesses prisoners for commitment, release, or transfer from detention facilitiesPrepares required recordsIssues clothing to inmatesMaintains records of inmates and their personal propertyRecommends work assignments for inmatesVisually and physically inspects inmates and their quarters, for contraband, weapons, or narcoticsChecks on sanitary conditions and orderliness of quartersPromotes acceptable inmate attitude and behaviorConfers with supervisors and custody-related service providers regarding behavioral and other inmate problemsParticipates in programs designed to prepare inmates for releaseChecks buildings and nearby grounds for irregular circumstances related to possible or attempted escape of prisonersAnswers telephone inquiries and at the counter inquiries pertaining to jail policies and individual prisonersReceives and gives receipts for bail moneyDispenses prescribed medications to prisonersProvides transportation for inmatesAssists with public safety dispatchingPrepares written reportsOther related duties as assignedQualifications & Special RequirementsEducation and Experience: A high school graduate or equivalent with one year of public contact experience.Knowledge Of:Security and emergency proceduresRules, regulations, practices, and procedures in the day-to-day operation and control of the County jailModern methods and techniques of discipline as they relate to persons under criminal confinementInmate supervision techniques, including supervision of special inmatesCriminal attitudes and behavioral patterns, and social factors underlying criminal behaviorInmate attitudes and behaviorMinority group relationsInmate disciplinary grievance proceduresFire safetyDefensive tacticsMovement of prisonersLegal responsibilities and liabilitiesReport writingCollection, identification, and preservation of evidenceJudicial proceduresCourtroom demeanor and testifyingInmate correctional programsLaws pertaining to local detention and holding areasCare and operation of small firearms and other law enforcement equipmentFirst aid and CPRAbility To:Observe, remember, and record events accuratelyLearn, interpret and enforce jail rules, regulations, and other policies with firmness, tact, and impartialityEffectively control, direct, and instruct inmates, individually and in groupsSpeak, read, and write EnglishUnderstand and carry out oral and written directionsMake quick effective and responsible decisions in emergencies and to take appropriate action including physically restraining violent inmatesPromote acceptable attitudes and behavior of inmates while in confinementPrepare and present clear and comprehensive written and oral reportsMeet and maintain standards of physical endurance and agilityUse and care for firearms and other law enforcement equipmentLearn and properly use standard broadcasting procedures of a police radio systemWork cooperatively with those contacted in the course of workPhysical: Height and weight must be proportionate; hearing normal; vision 20/100 corrected to 20/30. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk; run and jump. Use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. Reach with hands and arms. Climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must have ability to physically restrain violent inmates, walk the housing area, climb stairs, and operate electrical, electronic, and manual mechanisms.Special Requirements: Must pass written examination and physical agility examination, a psychological examination, a stringent physical examination, including drug screen, and personal background check. Must successfully complete a jail operations course certified by the California State Board of Corrections and approved Penal Code 832, first aid and CPR courses. You may be required to drive a motor vehicle in the course of employment and must possess a valid operator's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles. Must successfully complete a pre-employment background investigation. Your position may be required to serve as a Disaster Service Worker during a County emergency.Supplemental & Agency InformationThis recruitment will remain open on a continuous basis.
